Father’s Day History and Origin
Once upon a time in the early 1900’s, a woman named Sonora Dodd came up with the idea of a father’s day. During that time, there was already a celebration of mother’s day and it got so much attention. She then started to wonder why there was no celebration for one’s father when in fact both the mother and the father deserve an equal amount of praise and love.
Sonora was in a big family wherein her father, William Jackson Smart, became a widower because Sonora’s mother passed away during childbirth. This left her father to raise her and her siblings all on his own. It isn’t easy being a single parent, and Sonora believed that fathers like William should have a special day of appreciation for all their efforts.
Thus, she campaigned for father’s day to be officially recognized. Then, the first father’s day became a reality in Spokane, Washington in 1910 while some other towns and cities across America jumped on the bandwagon. It wasn’t until 1966 that it was included in the country’s official calendar by President Lyndon Johnson.

Types of Dads
Out of all the fathers in the world, our own dads are no doubt our favorite. Not all of them are the same because they all differ in goals, principles, family management and the like, but all of them has one goal: to be a good father to his children and a good husband to his wife. There are different kinds of dads and we will list down the most common types of dads here. Find out if your dad is one of them!
The Strict Dad
“Study well”, “Go straight home after school”, “Wear something decent and make sure you come home by 11”, “Clean your mess when you’re done” — these are some of the things strict dads say to his kids.
They are the uptight head of the family who greatly values principles, education, morals, money, etc. These types of pops may come off scary sometimes but their end goal is for their children to grow up to be respectable people. There are days when they loosen up so grab that opportunity and have fun. Behind that strict public persona is a mushy and outgoing father!
The Fun/Cool Dad
“Invite your friends over and let’s go play some ball!”, “Just do that later when you’ve rested”, “Oh hey bud! Bought you some booze for your barbecue party later” — Yep, he’s the total opposite of the strict dad.
If you have a cool and fun dad like this, then that your friends love hanging out at your place. They don’t feel like they have to watch their backs all the time and they dance and drink without worry. While fathers like these allow you to have all the fun you want, they also want you to know what your limitations are.
Sometimes, fun dads are the scariest ones. He will swoop in to save you in case anything happens, but once or twice is enough. If you went too far, that’s when they go beast mode and you don’t have a choice except to accept the consequence. What they are trying to teach their children is that one can have fun in life, just do it at the right time & the right way, and know where the boundary is.
The Lecturer Dad
Have you ever met someone who babbles away until you just zone out at one point and stop listening? Yeah, there are dads like that — the lecturer dad, also known as the noisy dad.
Most of these fathers are highly experienced in life which is why they feel the need to teach everything they discovered about it to their kids and their kids’ friends. It’s easy to appreciate their effort to talk about them because we actually could learn a thing or two. However, if you can’t find a way to subtly exclude yourself from the conversation soon, you never will. Sometimes, lecturer dads don’t know when to stop and they don’t know that they’re already eating the ears of his listeners.
Lecturer dads just want us to be prepared just in case we find ourselves in the same situation, so we will know what to do. They want us to be equipped with knowledge and that’s a great gift.
The Workaholic Dad
Cue music: Work by Rihanna. It’s all about work with these fathers. Yes, they work to provide for the family but sometimes, family time is sacrificed. It’s sad when they can’t come home to join family dinner, or when they miss their daughter’s dance presentation or their son’s baseball game.
It’s rare to have quality time with the family but they need to understand that what he’s doing is to keep the family financially stable. It’s for the good of everyone and they just need to work around it so they won’t emotionally stray away. A good workaholic dad will make up for it in a way the family can’t resist.
The Clingy Dad
Also known as the showy dad, he will verbalize how much he loves his kids or how proud he is of them. He’s the dad who will always take photos of their children, pick up his children, and forever sees his kids as babies.
If you have a clingy dad, you’d know that he has a hard time seeing you go explore the world and do the “adulting” stuff because he feels that you’re not ready yet when in fact he’s the one who isn’t ready. They want you to be successful, but they just can’t help but be by your side in case you need anything.
They are the kind of fathers who will never fail to make you feel loved ALL THE TIME. He will be there when you need him, comfort you when you’re down, and back you up when someone needs a lesson. He is the epitome of the future partner of their daughters and the future best friend of their sons.
